Not everyone who is diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome will be suffering the same symptoms, and even the symptoms you do have from the comprehensive list, may not be too severe.  The condition can seem better at some times than other.

If you have normal good health then probably the first symptoms you will experience will be dry mouth and dry eyes.

However, if you already suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis then your dry mouth and eyes will more than likely develop at a much slower rate, plus the condition may not be diagnosed straight away as being Sjogren’s Syndrome.

Normally saliva in the mouth is needed to help with the chewing and swallowing of your food, but with Sjogren’s salivary gland reduced production it is going to be more difficult to eat.  You may also experience a decrease in your sense of taste [and smell].

You have three sets of salivary glands in your mouth that all produce saliva.  These are situated under your tongue, in your cheeks in the area in front of your ears and they are also situated at the back of your mouth, this is three on each side of your face.

If you are suffering from Sjogren’s Syndrome these glands may appear to be swollen and they may feel tender but not necessarily painful, plus you could have some fever.  This situation can affect about 50% of people suffering from this condition.

Don’t forget the affect that the lack of saliva can have on your teeth.  Without adequate flow of saliva [due to Sjogren's salivary gland damage] your mouth can become a regular breeding ground for bad bacteria which will bring tooth decay and probably gum disease.

Give your dentist a fighting chance to keep your teeth in good order, don’t wait until the damage is done.  You may inadvertently let it get past the point of no return and lose your teeth as well as having these other problems.

You may be surprized to note that probably your dentist will be more knowledgeable about Sjogren’s than your general practitioner.

Diminished saliva due to Sjogren’s salivary gland damage could even be responsible for secondary Candida infection.

It is a fact that Sjogren’s Syndrome will always cause your immune system to attack the glands which produce saliva and tears first.

Unfortunately the root cause of Sjogren’s syndrome is still unknown and there is a lot of disagreement currently about the criteria for diagnosing Sjogren’s Syndrome.

There are difference of opinion between the UK and the EEC and even within the US.

This can be particularly difficult for anyone who needs recompense and financial help because they are incapacitated and unable to work because of Sjogren’s Syndrome in any of its guises.

What Is Oral Thrush?

This condition is also known as Oral Candidiasis.  A fungus called Candida is the cause of a mouth yeast infection. This type of infection cannot be passed on to other people. Thrush is naturally present in everyone’s mouth, including the elderly and babies.

Thrush can also be found in other areas of the body, including nail folds, vagina, and diaper areas. Denture wearers are commonly affected by this condition. People at a higher risk of this kind of infection include:

ՠ Diabetics

ՠ People who take steroids

ՠ People that have a difficult time keeping their mouth clean

Antibiotics can also be a common cause. This can be especially the case if someone has taken antibiotics over an extended period of time.

Detection

In order to be properly diagnosed, a patient may have a sample scraped from the mouth and sent for analysis at a laboratory. Certain known causes such antibiotics use and experiencing a difficult time with dentures should be investigated and treated prior to having this procedure done.

Indicators

Denture wearers will usually display white spots on the tongue and mouth.  These spots may form together to form larger spots, also known as plaques.  The underlying tissue may appear raw and red when wiped away. After the use of steroid or antibiotics, the affected areas are more often to look red and sore. Additionally, red sore areas may appear at the corner of the lips. These areas are known as angular stomatitis or angular cheilitis. A mild infection can actually be painless. But it can also become rather sore and irritated. In the case of babies, the soreness may cause them to drool saliva in order for them to properly feed.

Prevention

There are certain things that can be done that will lessen the odds of future outbreaks of oral thrush.

1)   If you are a diabetic, you can lower the risk of mouth yeast infections by good blood sugar level control.

2)   If you utilize a steroid inhaler, using a space device can reduce your odds of oral thrush.  Also, after using the inhaler, make sure to gargle and rinse your mouth.

3)   Dentures wearers are advised to keep their dentures meticulously clean and take them out before going to sleep.

4)   If you are taking medications and are experiencing a dry mouth as a result, try to keep the mouth moist by drinking regular sips of water.

5)   For babies, make sure all mouth toys, pacifiers, and feeding equipment are thoroughly sterilized.

Treatment

ՠ If left untreated, an oral yeast infection can cause uncomfortable soreness in the mouth. It can also cause dentures to not fit properly.

ՠ Keep the area of the mouth as clean as possible at all times. Rinse after every meal.

ՠ Try to not smoke cigarettes or wear dentures for more than 24 hours in one shot. Yeast clings to the fitting surface of dentures. For this reason, it’s vitally important to practice good denture hygiene.

ՠ Never wear dentures overnight and keep them out as much as possible. Clean the dentures in warm soapy water and scrub the fitting surface with a soft nailbrush.

ՠ Any solution used to sterilized bottles for babies can also be used for dentures. Chlorhexidine solution can be used for dentures comprised of metal components.  Just be sure not to use bleach on this type of denture.

If attentive hygiene and cleaning don’t do the trick, you may be prescribed lozenges or tablets to be slowly sucked.  This type of treatment usually lasts about a month. You may also need to check with your dentist after you have finished this treatment to make certain the condition has cleared.

Every few years, make sure to get new dentures made.

Finally, make sure to visit your dentist regularly, even if you don’t have teeth. You need to make sure the condition of your mouth remains healthy.

Mr. P.D., a 50 year old married male, presented to this examiner asking if anything could be done for his Sjogren’s Syndrome.

Sjogren’s Syndrome is a chronic illness in which white blood cells attack various glands in the body that produce moisture. Initial symptoms occur in the mouth and may move on to the eyes, although other organs in the body may be affected.

Mr. P.D. said that he was using three or four 5 mg. tablets of Salagen brand pilocarpine daily. This drug mimics acetylcholine, a substance normally produced by nerve cells to maintain moist secretions such as saliva. The patient had been told higher doses would not be more effective. He was concerned because inadequate saliva had already made it necessary for him to have two molars extracted by his dentist, who had diagnosed the illness, and he expected two more molar extractions to be necessary. These molars would all later be replaced by implants.

Mr. P.D. appeared to have a genuine oral problem; by his report only his salivary glands were affected. Although he was worried things could get worse, and that his eyes could suffer, he had no problem with them. He had no signs of depression or any other mental symptoms; he only had what seemed to be a genuine health concern.

Since the central nervous system is believed to be responsible for part of the symptoms of Sjogren’s, trying Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) seemed appropriate. We took a complete history of how symptoms had started, and what was associated with them in terms of memories or imagery. The patient associated the onset of the Sjogren’s with a dream reliving the movie “The Fly” with Jeff Goldblum. Somehow, when his mouth became dry, he had the feeling he was becoming a fly as if he were in the movie. He would sometimes wake up with this feeling at night.

Since Sjogren’s meant a “really dry mouth” to this patient, we did the first round of the EFT Basic Recipe on the words “dry mouth,” and managed to forgive his dentist, his teeth, and his mouth and his other physicians and anybody who had diagnosed or recommended treatment.

While the patient was tapping with his right hand on the acupuncture meridian designated as the thyroid area of his left hand, I asked him to continue tapping as we did a visualization exercise. He imagined himself in a theater, watching “The Fly.” He fast forwarded the movie from beginning to end, as he had it quite clear in his mind and said he could see himself go though all of the major scenes. Then, we asked him to run the movie backward in his mind, from end to beginning. He said he was able to do this easily as well. Then, we visualized him leaving the theater, and the movie’s name being taken off the marquee as it would not run again.

We went through another round of the EFT Basic Recipe, making affirmations about moving forward in life, leaving behind The Fly and leaving behind all problems related to a dry mouth.

When the tapping was over, I told the patient to relax and blow his problems out to the universe. Neither he nor I was prepared for what happened. He started to literally froth at the mouth, producing so dramatic an amount of saliva that he started drooling all over his shirt and we needed some tissues to clean things up.

As of an eight month follow-up, the patient, who has learned how to do EFT himself, has not needed it for this symptom. We suggested some alternate forms of “artificial saliva” or salivary stimulants which he may use minimally, but has had no need to do so in the past several weeks. He has had no further dental damage and cannot remember the last time he required pilocarpine.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist in California with a background (past lives?) in neurosurgery, neurology, and psychopharmacology. Because I’m so far out of the mainstream, I’m known as “The Renegade Doctor!” I’m a cash-only doctor now. No insurance will pay for the level of treatment I give. I love my patients and want only the best for them. I don’t do a lot of psychotherapy — I refer to the experts on that. But I am a strong proponent of Emotional Freedom Technique. I combine it with some of the other therapy modes I’ve studied and have my own hybrid type of therapy that brings me good results. I’ve also got a seminar coming up for physicians interested in learning to have a better life for themselves, working less, and making more money!

Sjogren’s Syndrome – Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease which is characterized by the abnormal production of extra antibodies in the blood that are directed against various tissues of the body. The dryness results from the reduced secretion of various kinds of glands, following invasion and damage by white cells that are part of the immune system. Although you can develop Sjogren’s syndrome at any age, most people are older than 40 at diagnosis. Sjogren’s syndrome affects 1-4 million people in the United States. The condition is nine times as likely to occur in women as in men. Sjogren’s syndrome is also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. Sjögren’s syndrome exists in both a primary and secondary form. In the absence of other autoimmune disorders, it is classified as primary Sjögren’s syndrome.

Causes

People with this disease have abnormal proteins in their blood suggesting that their immune system, which normally functions to protect the body against cancers and invading infections, is reacting against their own tissue. Sjogren’s syndrome sometimes runs in families, which may also point to a genetic connection. Researchers are also looking at the possibility that hormonal factors are involved because women are more likely to get this disease. It may also be caused by a virus, where the immune system malfunctions and is unable to stop fighting even after the virus is gone.

Symptoms

Sjogren’s syndrome affects everyone differently. You may not have every symptom listed here, and you may have only minor problems with those you do have. The symptoms may seem worse at some times than at others.

Other symptoms associated with Sjögren’s include the following:

* Nasal dryness, nosebleeds, congestion, and impaired taste and smell, as well as more serious conditions, such as bronchitis and pneumonia, caused by damage to mucous glands in the nose
* Dryness in the eustachian tubes, which can lead to a clogged feeling in the ear and impaired hearing
* Itchy, dry skin
* Vaginal dryness
* Nutritional malabsorption, caused by affected mucous lining of the stomach
* Pancreatitis

Treatment

The main goal of treatment is to relieve discomfort and lessen the effects of the dryness. Since Sjogren’s syndrome affects everyone differently, your treatment plan will be based

on your specific needs.

Moisture replacement therapies may ease the symptoms of dryness. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to treat musculoskeletal symptoms. For individuals with severe complications, corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs may be prescribed.

Common treatment may include:

* artificial tears to help with dry eyes
* saliva stimulants and mouth lubricants for dry mouth
* anti-inflammatory medication for joint or muscle pain
* corticosteroids or immuno-suppressive drugs for lung, kidney, blood vessel or nervous system problems.

Interstitial Cystitis is painful and uncomfortable, and often misdiagnosed. Because of the symptoms, people who have Interstitial Cystitis, or IC, are often diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, bladder infections, or kidney infections. Symptoms of IC include bladder frequency and urgency, pelvic pain and irritation, and in women, pain may be worse around menstruation. Pain can range from being mild to so severe that it is debilitating. IC is usually divided into two subtypes – classic and non-ulcer.

It is unknown what causes IC, however tests are being done that question whether IC is a single condition, or if it represents a spectrum of other disorders. Not so long ago, it was believed that IC was a psychological problem and that the symptoms were a manifestation of this. That belief left people, especially women, confused and wondering whether they were imagining their symptoms or not. Thankfully, new research is being done to address the causes of IC, the symptoms, and whether it is an autoimmune disease. Some doctors and researchers believe IC may be an autoimmune disease, or that IC represents several different disorders.

Several recent tests have been done in patients with classic and non-ulcer IC. Reports show autoantibodies in patients with IC, and some clinical findings also show similarities with those that show up in patients with autoimmune disorders. IC has also been shown to be associated with some autoimmune disorders. Some of these include Systemic Lupus, Lupus Erythematosus, Sjogrens syndrome, and autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland. What all of this means in simple terms is that systematic and autoimmune disorders show up more in people who have IC than in people who don’t.

When our body encounters something foreign, it responds by mounting an attack on the object. In order for our body to do this, it has to recognize that the object is foreign, and not part of itself. Usually, the body recognizes what is and what is not ‘self.’ In autoimmune diseases, the body is unable to recognize some part of itself, and will attack it. This could happen with one organ, a particular part of the body, or the entire body.

So, what is the answer to the question, Is Interstitial Cystitis an autoimmune disease? Well, frankly, we just don’t know. However, research studies may be pointing to the affirmative, or at the very least that it is definitely somehow connected. Until further research is completed, we won’t have the answer to our questions. The good thing is that now doctors see that IC is definitely a physical medical problem, and hopefully research will continue and we will have an answer soon.
